SCP Regulations and Products


More than once in our lives, we have witnessed familiar popular consumer products being recalled due to possible dangers of toxicity. Soon after the recall, we are bombarded with more news of the adverse effects of using the product, perhaps even provided with an increased list of related dangerous products. Incidents like this make us wonder, how many more of the items we use on a daily basis are dangerous? The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), a department under the California state government, attempts to resolve this issue through the SCP Program.

Steps forward for SCP regulations

Great news abounds for California residents. In October the DTSC made official the inital list of ~153 candidate chemicals for the Safer Consumer Product (SCP) regulations. These compounds all have known toxicity to human health or the environment as well as having a presence in consumer products. The next step for the regulations was to specify a set of initial products for review - this step was finalized this week.
